Saigon tonight – hospitality in Ho Chi Minh City
When travellers decide where to go for a holiday, they are not only concerned with the sights there are to see, but also how comfortable they will be during their stay. Thus a city’s hotels, restaurants, bars and other facilities for tourists count for a lot. In this respect, Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) has made fantastic progress since the early 1990s when the first adventurous budget travellers arrived.
Though it’s still a firm favourite with backpackers for its wide choice of cheap accommodation, Saigon is now popular with visitors of all kinds, and the five-star hotel chains, such as the Hyatt and the Sheraton, that have opened during the last decade, are also doing a roaring trade. Vietnam may still be a communist country but its business people are very sharp, and there are now plenty of mid-range options for travellers who don’t want to rough it too much but can’t afford the sky-high rates of the top hotels.

More on Saigon hospitality - tonight in Ho Chi Minh City
Saigon’s culinary scene is as dynamic and diverse as you can find anywhere. Visitors can enjoy both Vietnamese and international cuisine at every level, from a steaming bowl of pho (noodle soup) at a simple streetside stall for less than half a dollar to US$50 imported steaks at the city’s trendy new eateries.
Add to this thousands of bars that offer every type of ambience from intimate and relaxing to loud and raucous, and Saigon becomes one of Southeast Asia’s most appealing cities to hang out in.
There’s no avoiding the fact that the city moves at a frenetic pace and all visitors need to allow time to relax. During recent years, the global popularity of spas has arrived in Vietnam as well, so now after a busy day’s sightseeing or shopping, it’s tempting to pamper yourself at one of the city’s many well-equipped spas.
